TAWU EMBRACE THE LONG AWAITED PDA No. 6 of 2024

TAWU in collaboration with Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) appreciates the efforts by the Botswana Government to bring into force the Person with Disability Act NO. 6 of 2024.

The long awaited development, challenges both organizations to actively participate in the proclaimed on going development of regulations intended to factionalize the Act.

The collaborating organizations, implore government to seriously consider the following:

  1. The creation of an adaptable environment that embraces innovative solutions primarily funded by government.
  2. Infusion of emerging technologies in search of innovative practical solutions to current and future impediments toward achieving equality and equity in fair distribution of natural resources, access to education and associated services, and to a larger extent persons with disabilities day to day realization of their socioeconomic-political rights.

While we embrace the United Nations definitions and classifications of persons with disabilities, we call upon the Botswana Government to consider extending coverage to persons who fall within the grey zone. Those who are excluded by the definition but neither fit the societal standards of a normal person. These individuals can’t function in work environments, let alone leading productive lives.

BCD and TAWU in their quest for inclusivity, are excited about the opportunity to join hands and advocate for robust debates and inputs in the legal framework that governs persons with disabilities day to day lives.

The two (2) organizations endeavors to continuously make meaningful contributions to any undertakings by government or private entities that seeks to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities.
