In the advent of growing trends especially of governments and oligarchs movements to subjugate higher education institutions and practitioners to unfavorable conditions that limits efficiency and attainment of desired creativity and innovation, there is need for concerted defense of Academic Autonomy and Freedom.
Mounting pressures on censorship of course materials, elimination of programs of study, harassment, intimidation and detention of scholars; offers an opportunity through this discourse to hatch a strategic actionable program in protection of academic autonomy and freedom.
The inclusive nature of the forum, covering a wide spectrum of social movements within higher education may share ideas on legal foundations and historical perspectives inclusive of realities on the ground.
The Botswana Academic Community, through various discourse platforms may share opportunities, ideas and challenges with a view to influence for favorable legislative reforms.
As a precursor, TAWU and the like minded organizations should engage to reflect on various topical issues, such as:
- Definition of Academic Freedom, that should take cognizance of international perspectives and challenges thereto.
- Botswana Higher Education historical perspective on autonomy and academic freedom.
- Botswana legislative framework on protection of academic freedoms and associated challenges
- The Higher Education institutions’ realities in the protection or lack thereof of academic freedoms.
- Trade Unions role in defence of academic freedoms and International Perspective.
It is hoped that this shared view will stimulate discussions that may form the baseline for future engagements.
