Trainers and Allied Workers Union, while it organizes workers in higher education and ancillary institutions and industries, it has come to the realization that amongst those it purports to protect there are neglected employees. These neglected workers it has emerged are those with special needs.
As a quest to achieve desired levels of inclusivity, TAWU responded to an otherwise widening gap between the ordinary population and persons with special needs.
The code for trade unions is to protect workers irrespective of their circumstances hence TAWU’s endeavor to embrace and live the concept of inclusion.
As step to towards the realization of inclusivity and fair prospects of national and personal development, TAWU signed a memorandum of understanding with Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD).
The object of this agreement is to strengthen collaborative measures that promotes equal protection before the law and equitable access to opportunities for self development and wellbeing. It further establishes a foundation for strategic approach to the needs of persons with disabilities in the workplace.
The agreement, ushers in TAWU as an institution that has to take full responsibility of workplace issues for persons with disabilities in Botswana. In collaboration and guidance of BCD, the mammoth task ahead requires diligence and commitment of the highest order.
The core strategic objectives of this cooperation are:
- Collective protection and development of persons with disabilities at the workplace.
- Training on protocols and strategic interventions on persons with disabilities needs.
- Advocating for laws and policies that protect persons with disabilities.
- Participating in all activities that promotes fair and equitable protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
